Retention: Pacing the Edit
Getting a viewer to stop scrolling is only half the battle. If they leave after 5 seconds, your video dies in the algorithm. Retention is governed entirely by pacing. The modern short-form edit requires a relentless, dynamic rhythm.
Eradicating Dead Air
Every single frame of silence between words must be cut. This is non-negotiable. Milliseconds of dead air signal to the brain that it's safe to scroll. Cut tightly on the waveform.
Visual Pattern Interrupts
You cannot rely on a static shot for more than 3 to 4 seconds. You must force the viewer's eyes to readjust.
- Punch-ins (Digital Zoom): Zoom in 15-20% on the timeline during emphasized words.
- B-Roll overlays: Cut to highly relevant, fast-moving B-roll while you continue talking.
- Dynamic Captions: Pop-up text, word-by-word highlight colors, and emojis provide constant micro-stimulation.
The J-Cut and L-Cut
To create seamless flow, detach your audio from your video. A J-cut allows the audio of the next clip to start playing before the video cuts over. This tricks the brain into staying for the next visual payoff.
Retention Checklist
Before exporting, check for:
- Zero frames of silence between sentences.
- A visual change every 3 seconds minimum.
- Sound effects (swooshes, pops) paired with every major visual change.
- Animated subtitles locked in the safe zone (center frame).
